Certain environmental situations call for a direct assessment of toxic effects upon specific types of organisms. This testing is very broad and shows the potential effects of releasing substances into the environment, usually through waterways. Organisms such as rainbow trout, daphnia magna and microtox (bioluminescent bacteria) may be destroyed by the improper release of toxins.

Exposing these organisms to the solution to be released shows if a toxic effect will potentially occur. This way, negative effects take place in the lab on an extremely small scale rather than in nature on a large and catastrophic scale. The Toxicology Services Laboratory is accredited by SCC/CAEAL for specific parameters, which can be viewed on the SCC website. Clients utilizing this area include oil and gas companies, manufacturing companies, waste treatment facilities, materials safety personnel, airports, recyclers and a variety of other organizations. The professionals in this area also focus on microbiological work such as the assessment of total and fecal coliforms, bacterial identification and enumeration, and total plate counts.

AGAT’s Toxicology Experience

AGAT has participated in a large number of baseline data collection studies such as the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board G-50 drilling waste sump remediation study. This project involved the assessment of hundreds of sump fluids for toxic effects. It was extremely important for the results to be completely reliable as the data for this study was used for the creation of standing regulations. A large number of companies relied upon our services for this study. A growing number of new products are designed intentionally to be nontoxic in the environment and assessment of their nontoxic character is needed from an independent source for marketing and registration purposes. Analytical mistakes could be extremely costly to these organizations. They know that they can rely on our accredited expertise for accurate data each and every time.
